divine consciousness

“A person in the divine consciousness, although engaged in seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, moving about, sleeping, and breathing, always knows within himself that he actually does nothing at all. Because while speaking, evacuating, receiving, opening or closing his eyes, he always knows that only the material senses are engaged with their objects and that he is aloof from them.” (Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-gita, 5.8-9)

One should not give up anything which can be utilized in the service of the Lord. That is a secret of devotional service. Anything that can be utilized in advancing Krishna consciousness and devotional service should be accepted. For instance, we are using many machines for the advancement of our present Krishna consciousness movement, machines like typewriters, dictating machines, tape recorders, microphones and airplanes.

Sometimes people ask us, “Why are you utilizing material products if you condemn the advancement of material civilization?” But actually we do not condemn. We simply ask people to do whatever they are doing in Krishna consciousness. This is the same principle on which, in Bhagavad-Gita, Krishna advised Arjuna to utilize his fighting abilities in devotional service.

Similarly, we are utilizing these machines for Krishna’s service. With such sentiment for Krishna, or Krishna consciousness, we can accept everything. If the typewriter can be utilized for advancing our Krishna consciousness movement, we must accept it. Similarly, the dictating machine or any other machine must be used. Our vision is that Krishna is everything. Krishna is the cause and effect, and nothing belongs to us. Krishna’s things must be used in the service of Krishna. That is our vision.”

Fully Krishna Conscious

"What is the value of a prolonged life which is wasted, inexperienced
by years in this world? Better a moment of full consciousness,
because that gives one a start in searching after his
supreme interest."

(Srila Sukadeva Gosvami - Srimad-Bhagavatam 2.1.12)

Sacrifice

"If one is unhappy to see the distress of other living beings and
happy to see their happiness, his religious principles are appreciated
as imperishable by exalted persons who are considered pious and
benevolent."

(Sri Dadhici Muni - Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.10.9)

For one who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me

A person once visited a temple under construction where he saw a sculptor making an Archavigraha of Krishna. Suddenly he noticed a similar Archavigraha kept nearby. Surprised, he asked the sculptor, "Do you need two statues of the same Deity?" "No," said the sculptor without looking up, "We need only one, but the first one got damaged at the last stage." The gentleman examined the Deity and found no apparent damage. "Where is the damage?" he asked. "There is a scratch on the nose of the Deity." said the sculptor, still busy with his work. "Where are you going to install the Deity?"

The sculptor replied that it would be installed on a pillar twenty feet high.. "If the Deity is that far, who is going to know that there is a scratch on the nose?" the gentleman asked. The sculptor stopped his work, looked up at the gentleman, smiled and said, "Any one knows it or not, Krishna knows it."

This is the realization required when we are involved in any activity in our life when we are physically awake. Krishna is present in our heart in the form of Paramatma as He is present in everything around us. This has been explained in Srimad Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagvatam in various shlokas. One of these important shlokas is Srimad Bhagavad Gita 6.30.

yo maam pashyati sarvatra / sarvam ca mayi pashyati
tasyaaham na pranashyaami / sa ca me na pranashyati

For one who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me, I am never lost, nor is he ever lost to Me.

In his wonderful purport to the above verse, Srila Prabhupada has guided us to clear our understanding on this subject - A person in Krishna consciousness certainly sees Lord Krishna everywhere, and he sees everything in Krishna. Such a person may appear to see all separate manifestations of the material nature, but in each and every instance he is conscious of Krishna, knowing that everything is a manifestation of Krishna's energy. Nothing can exist without Krishna, and Krishna is the Lord of everything — this is the basic principle of Krishna consciousness.

We are many times under illusion that no one is watching us when we are involved in certain activities, but Krishna is all pervading and everywhere. He is omni-present and omniscient. He is with us even in our thoughts and our dreams since He is situated in our hearts as Paramatma. We are never alone or left un-noticed. All our good and bad deeds are being watched out by Him and the CID agents appointed by Him. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 6.1.42 the list of CIDs is explained very nicely.

suryo’gnih kham marud devah / somah sandhya ahani disah
kam kuh svayam dharma iti / hy ete daihasya saksinah

(Yamadutas to Vishnudutas) "The sun, fire, sky, air, demigods, moon, evening, day, night, directions, water, land and Supersoul Himself witness all the activities of the living entity."

So we need to understand and realise that every moment of our life is with Him. When we think of Him all the time, He will reciprocate in the same way by helping us to remember Him constantly. Let us therefore sincerely pray to the Supreme Lord, Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev to bestow their mercy upon us, so that we remain conscious of His existence and use this rare opportunity of human life for remembering Him all the time and stay in continuous devotional service.

In the association of pure devotees

In the Srimad Bhagvatam and Chaitanya Caritamrta, the Lord explains the various aspects of association of devotees in many slokas. One such sloka occurs in Srimad Bhagavatam 3.25.25,

sataam prasangaan mama virya samvido
bhavanti hrd karna rasaayanaah kathaah
tad joshanaad aashu apavarga vartmani
shraddhaa ratir bhaktir anukramishyati

"In the association of pure devotees, discussion of the pastimes and activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is very pleasing and satisfying to the ear and the heart. By cultivating such knowledge one gradually becomes advanced on the path of liberation, and thereafter he is freed, and his attraction becomes fixed. Then real devotion and devotional service begin."

We can test the quality of devotee association by how much attraction we have developed for hearing more and more krishna katha and how much we develop our compassion towards other living entities and want to help them. But rather on the practical field, there is always some dissensions and misunderstandings even among the devotees. Since the maturity is absent in us, we do not rise above the temporary misunderstandings to serve the higher purpose of cooperatively serving the mission of the Supreme Lord and our Spiritual master.

In SB 11.2.47 such an immature devotee is explained as follows:

arcaayaam eva haraye / pujaam yah shraddhayehate
na tad-bhakteshu caanyeshu / sa bhaktah praakrtah smrtah

“A devotee who faithfully engages in the worship of the Deity in the temple but does not behave properly toward other devotees or people in general is called a praakrta-bhakta, a materialistic devotee, and is considered to be in the lowest position.”

So many of us do chanting all these years, read Bhagavatam and Bhagavat-gita many times, conducted so many programs, but still the tendency to pick up quarrel and misunderstanding with others does not go away. Our Guru Maharaj says that this is because almost all the time we are caught up in the modes of material nature. To serve him and please him, we need to rise above these modes and cooperatively serve him to the best of our ability.

The association of devotees is characterized by friendship and love. The Vaishnavas are the representatives of Radha and Krishna in this world. There are six kinds of affectionate exchange that are shared with devotees, called priti-lakshanam, the signs of love. The devotee is a harbor, a storehouse of love. The quality of our sadhana is recognized by the greater presence of natural affection between each other.

In Chaitanya Caritamra , the discussion between Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Ramananda Rai is very important to ponder over to understand the importance of devotee association.

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu asked Ramananda Raya, “What is the most painful kind of suffering?”
Ramananda Raya responded, “I know of nothing more unbearable than separation from the devotees of Krishna.”

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu asked, “What is the most auspicious and beneficial activity for the living entity?”
Ramananda Raya replied, “There is nothing more auspicious than association with the devotees of Krishna.”

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has said, if individual spirit souls can have the knowledge that they are interrelated with loving relation, this forest of fire of clashing of interests will stop.

Thus it is possible to transform the material world and its elements into spiritual ones by proper consciousness. For this reason it is said that the Vaishnava's body is not material because his senses are being used in the optimal fashion for the development of his pure consciousness.

devotional service to the Personality

"It is true that by practicing restraint of the senses by the yoga
system one can get relief from the disturbances of desire and lust,
but this is not sufficient to give satisfaction for the soul, for this
[satisfaction] is derived from devotional service to the Personality
of Godhead."

(Sri Narada Muni - Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.6.35)

protected in devotional service

"He who is situated in pure knowledge of the transcendence of the
Supreme Personality of God is so protected in devotional service that
material contamination cannot touch him."

(His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada – Bhagavad Gita-
7.17, purport)

When Krishna returned to Dwaraka

When Krishna returned to Dwaraka the citizens arrived before the Lord with their respective presentations, offering them to the fully satisfied and self-sufficient one, who, by His own potency, incessantly supplies others. These presentations were like the offering of a lamp to the sun. Yet the citizens began to speak in ecstatic language to receive the Lord, just as wards welcome their guardian and father.

Srimad Bhagavatam - Canto 1 Chpater 11 Verses 4-5

What an appropriate description!! When we offer something to Krishna it is like offering a small lamp to the sun.

The white and fat-boweled conchshell

The white and fat-boweled conchshell, being gripped by the hand of Lord Kṛishna and sounded by Him, appeared to be reddened by the touch of His transcendental lips. It seemed that a white swan was playing in the stems of red lotus flowers.

Srimad Bhagavatam - Canto 1 Chapter 11 Verse 2

Anything that comes in personal touch of Krishna becomes transcendentally beautiful.

talk of Him

Absorbed in the thought of the transcendental qualities of the Lord, who is glorified in select poetry, the ladies on the roofs of all the houses of Hastināpura began to talk of Him. This talk was more attractive than the hymns of the Vedas.Srimad Bhagavatam - Canto 1 Chapter 10 Verse 20Any talk about Lord Krishna is more attractive than some dry mantras which are recited without any love and feelings.

The sun may be perceived differently, but the sun is one

Bhishmadeva:"Now I can meditate with full concentration upon that one Lord, Śrī Kṛishṇa, now present before me because now I have transcended the misconceptions of duality in regard to His presence in everyone's heart, even in the hearts of the mental speculators. He is in everyone's heart. The sun may be perceived differently, but the sun is one."

At the moment of death, let my ultimate attraction

Bhishmadeva:"At the moment of death, let my ultimate attraction be to Śrī Kṛishṇa, the Supreme Lord. I concentrate my mind upon the chariot driver of Arjuna who stood with a whip in His right hand and a bridle rope in His left, who was very careful to give protection to Arjuna's chariot by all means. Those who saw Him on the Battlefield of Kurukṣetra attained their original forms after death."Srimad Bhagavatam - Canto 1 Chapter 9 Verse 39
